1st Lesson With Dr-Dogs

Scallop finally got to start his first proper comprehensive obedient class with Stanley and Serene of Dr-Dogs. We were told to arrive 15 mins earlier (4.15pm) so that the students will have time to socialise before the start of the actual class. Scallop was real timid and kept backing away from his classmates.
Among the 6 students, Scallop is the only Miniature Schnauzer, unlike the previous class which has 4 of them!

Besides Scallop, the rest of the class are made up of :
Max : the 3.5 months old Golden Retriever
Travis : also a Golden Retriever, but he's an adult and huge
Princess : Shih Tzu
Puppy : Silky Terrier? <- to be confirmed next lesson
?? : a really fierce Jack Russell <- will find out name next lesson

Though he's timid, Scallop behaved superbly throughout and made us really proud. His sit-stay was very consistent and has the longest duration. All thanks to his twice daily 10 minutes sit-stay exercise before meals.

Main take-aways from today's class to practise and enforce :
- Scallop must sit immediately upon command and not walk here walk there before sitting
- Scallop must always walk on the handler's left
- Scallop must stop being a vacuum cleaner
- Scallop must try to stop turning around to face the handler during a sit-stay exercise when the handler walks behind him

And some useful reminders :
- 4-8 months will be a tough period when Scallop changes his baby teeth to adult ones, he may vomit and have diarrhea and lose his appetite and will chew everything in sight
- has to rid Scallop of his separation anxiety problem

Looking forward to the next class to learn the proper way to teach him the 'Down' command, which we had tried unsuccessfully so far.

  1. Lol @ Scallop the vacuum cleaner.
10 minutes of sit stay?! So sadistic but at least now you can hao lian in front of other dog owners.

Separation anxiety problem = pee everytime you moved out of his sight?
    The class looks fun!
    Good job Scallop

  2. Am increasing to 12 mins. Eventually he will have to sit stay 30 mins before he can get his dinner.

Scallop has perfect toilet manners in the night after we go to bed and in the day when we are out for work. The problems only start when we are at home... he will tend to pee somewhere (except the pee tray) even when we are right in front of him...

Yep! The concept of Dr-Dogs is to teach through fun and play so the dogs (and their owners) will enjoy the lessons. When want to go kaypo?

  4. When he's asked to sit stay for his daily food, he obeys even when we went about with our chores in the other rooms (ie. we moved out of his sight)

Apa ini seeking attention? His pee problem? Dun think so lei.. cos people can be playing with him giving him all their attention and halfway through he just pee...

Class is every Sunday lor. Can only bring family members but they cannot disturb the ongoing class.
